allocation during specific time periods. Each window is associated with a specific resource plan, which you create through the Database Resource Manager. Using windows, you can activate different resource plans during different time periods, thus providing differential prioritizing for jobs.

A window group is a collection of similar windows. For example, you can create a window for your weekends and a window for your holidays, and group both these windows into a single maintenance window group.

Once these conditions are found, an event notification N can be sent. The following steps are required: 1. If N requires a payload, you must create and package the payload into a form suitable for transmission to subscribers. 2. You must protect the subscriber list from modifications while notifications are being sent. 3. N is sent to all subscribers. A path must exist to each subscriber. 4. The sender must deal with exceptions that occur during notification delivery. The exceptions alluded to in step 4 include those related to the delivery process and those thrown by event subscribers. Some component models, such as JavaBeans, rely on exceptions, in certain situations, to return information from subscribers back to publishers. For example, JavaBeans constrained properties use vetoable events, in which the publisher sends a notification indicating that a change is about to take place. Subscribers wishing to block the change can fire a special exception, which acts as a signal back to the publisher to inhibit the change. It is interesting to observe that the basic steps required to fire an event are not dependent on the delivery model chosen. It doesn t matter if notifications are sent between two objects in the same process using a local procedure call or sent around the world to another system over the Internet. Obviously, the implementation of each step will be application-dependent, but the overall process doesn t change conceptually.

The Scheduler architecture consists of the job table, job coordinator, and the job workers (or slaves, as Oracle calls them). The job table contains information about jobs, such as the job name, program name, and job owner. You can examine the job table by using the DBA_SCHEDULER_JOBS view. The job coordinator regularly looks in the job table to find out what jobs to execute. The job coordinator creates and manages the job worker processes, which actually execute the job. When you create a new job or execute a job, a background process (cjqnnn) wakes up and coordinates the running of the job. When the job coordinator tells a job worker to execute a job, the worker process starts a new database session and starts a transaction. It executes the job, and once completed, it commits and ends the transaction and terminates the database session. The job worker updates the job table, the run count, and the job log table.

Oracle creates all jobs, programs, and schedules in the schema of the user that creates these objects, but it creates all the advanced Scheduler components, like job classes, windows, and window groups, at the database level, and their owner is the SYS schema. The SCHEDULER_ADMIN role contains all Scheduler system privileges, with the WITH ADMIN OPTION clause. The DBA role contains the SCHEDULER_ADMIN role. The MANAGE SCHEDULER system privilege lets you do the following: Create, drop, and alter job classes, windows, and window groups. Stop any job. Start and stop windows prematurely.

Notifications must not be sent unless there are subscribers. In systems that use PCs to send notifications, subscribers are often managed through references to interfaces or methods. If no subscribers are present, those references won t point to anything. Attempting to make an indirect call would cause a run-time error. When firing events using shared resources, there will generally be a data structure that holds addresses or names of the resources. When no subscribers are available, the addresses or names should have easily testable values, such as blank strings or null values.

All Scheduler objects are of the form [schema.]name. By default, all scheduler object names are in uppercase, unless you wrap the lowercase names in double quotes, as in "test_job".
